Before dying of AIDS-related illnesses, New York-based artist David Wojnarowicz (1954–92) drew attention to the injurious artificiality of divisions both between human and non-human animals as well as within the Homo sapiens species itself, in particular with regard to its exclusion and condemnation of homosexuality. Engagements outside the “clockwork of civilization”—homosexual relations, natural disasters, animal behaviour, bodily contagion—could, Wojnarowicz argued, facilitate critical shifts in perspective. Notwithstanding its zoological references, his work muddies and upsets taxonomic hierarchies and boundaries by subverting normative territorial binds to identity, family, community, nation and even species.
