This article studies the often-despised genre of the photo-novel from a wide range of points of view: historical, cultural, narratological. The photo-novel appears as a genre whose first examples were seen both as an absolute novelty and as a terrible anachronism, and the entire history of the genre is interpreted in light of the attempt to cope with this difficulty. In this process, the twin notions of self-irony and parody play a crucial role, as is demonstrated by the early fictional dramatisation of the medium in Fellini’s The White Sheik.
