Abstract |
In Make Me a Woman, Vanessa Davis explores her Jewish identity in myriad ways, drawing on everything from her memories of her Bar Mitzvah to her experiences dating a non-Jewish man after a shift in coasts from New York to California. The following interview is an edited compilation of emails between Davis and me over the course of six months, from November 2010 to April 2011. We exchanged more than two dozen emails, in which I prodded Davis for, among other things, her opinions on the Jewish mother stereotype, her influences and her artistic process.
