This paper looks at gender intervention in American comic books since the late sixties. Since this period women and men have intervened in this culture to transform the role and representation of women in comic book culture. This paper introduces the term modes of gender intervention to point to the complex array of practices and meanings found in gender intervention. Modes of gender intervention involve different sites and practices as well as different politics, identities and representations. In the case of comic book culture, interventions occur at sites like publishing, shops, conventions and the Internet and in practices ranging from creating comic books and fanzines to organizing panels and organizations. And content can range from feminist interventions to autobiographies from a female perspective to diverse female identities and representations. Also unlike most feminist media research, which focuses on female consumers, this paper looks at gender intervention in production and consumption.
