Martin Rowson’s graphic adaptation of T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land maps the themes and motifs of hardboiled detective fiction onto the frame of the poem. By reading Eliot’s notion of historical sense against the grain, Tony Venezia traces a transtextual archive of associations between modernism and popular culture that Rowson rearticulates as pulp modernism.
