Abstract
[Abstract in English below]

The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman.

What takes place in the transfer between novel and graphic novel, in what is often called “adaptation”? Novels and graphic novels are in many ways fundamentally different media. One consists mainly of words, linearly presented, whereas the other is a plane containing integrated words and images. This article addresses the result of Martin Rowson’s attempt to make a comic book out of Laurence Sterne’s experimental and idiosyncratic novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. I argue that analysis of such artworks relies on a close acquaintance with the formal attributes of comics as well as a willingness to think alternatively about how adaptation works. My alternative nomenclature includes terms such as “configuration” and “model”. The article aims to explain why these terms are preferable to the extant terminology of adaptation studies.
