Abstract
The comic strip, as significant practice, participates in the struggle between tradition and change. From the 1960’s, the comic strip rebelled, broke bounds, exceeded limits and institutionalized its marginal possibilities. The article not only synthesizes theoretical concepts but also outlines a history of the comic strip as practice and as metalanguage. It reflects on current perspectives—both in the developed countries and the Third World—emphasizes production and reproduction in Latin America, and concentrates attention on Central America and particulary Costa Rica. Hypotheses, assumption and empirical research are interwoven in a single text in order to generate discussion and other texts. Every page contain relativity, legitimate practices put pressure on marginal population, disinformation blocks and limits. The collection of material, the confrontations of different texts, the attempt to demonstrate contradictions and possibilities all have—from this perspective—political in addition to academic value.
