Abstract

A travers une histoire d’un genre spécifique à la science-fiction, le dessin animé de robots géants, on cherche à voir de quelle manière le robot (simple instrument au départ) devient un élément essentiel de l’intrigue. Les divers types d’interfaces entre la machine et son pilote reflètent les évolutions techniques réelles et marquent un passage vers une plus grande fusion du mécanique et du vivant. La SF japonaise reflète ainsi l’histoire socioculturelle d’un pays, ayant subi une industrialisation forcée sous l’ère Meiji, qui a fait de la reconstruction et de la technologie de pointe des enjeux majeurs de l’après-guerre, et qui doit aujourd’hui faire face à un phénomène de désengagement social.

Through the history of a sub-genre of science-fiction (cartoons featuring giant robots), this article attempts to identify how the robot switches roles, going from simple instrument to essential part of the plot. The various types or relationship between the machine and those who guide it reflect real-life technical developments. They show an ever-closer link between the mechanic and the organic. Thus, Japanese science-fiction is a mirror of the sociocultural history of a country that has undergone an accelerated process of industrialization (during the Meiji period), that has made reconstruction and technological development its main goals in the post-war era, and that nowadays has to deal with growing social disengagement.
