Abstract |
The Search, the 2007 Holocaust graphic narrative by Eric Heuvel et al. (originally in Dutch and now translated into other languages including English), was first tested in government-funded initiatives in secondary schools in Germany, Poland, and Hungary. A project with a quite different impact from Art Spiegelmann’s Maus, it was expressly planned for teaching 13- to 16-year-olds with little knowledge of the subject. This essay examines the strategies of the book’s creators. These include the care and skill of its design, the effectiveness of the artwork, the inclusiveness of the range of topics covered, and how, by propelling them to explore documentary materials, The Search can make vivid, harrowing, and moving for these students at least some dimensions of the Holocaust experience of individuals.
