These are startling documents: comic-strip versions of Shakespeare plays in which the dialogue is a complete standard modern text, though unlike standard Shakespeares, there are no notes. Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth are by an artist called Von, whose technique was identified for me by a resident teenage expert as ‘Batman and Robin’ - pure old fashioned comic-strip. Oscar Zarate's Othello is visually and in other respects -more interesting, reflecting not only some real thinking about the play, but a little bit of Barlach and Ensor as well. The publishers too have been a little more thoughtful with Othello, and have provided a plot summary and a brief introduction.
