Humboldt's writings about his American expedition (1799–1804) document his perception of tropical biodiversity with all his senses: ranging from a described visual and acoustic overwhelming to comparative tasting. His verbal and pictorial travel notes on the flora and fauna he discovered were remediated by Andrea Wulf and Lilian Melcher in the extraordinary graphic travelogue The Adventures of Alexander von Humboldt (2019). Like Humboldt himself, they do not rely on traditional models for representing biodiversity in word and image, but rather imitate, transgress, comment on, and animate Humboldt's own innovative approaches (including his "Naturgemälde"). This essay examines the hybrid aesthetics and collage technique of this opulent remediation, which is characterized by a high degree of intertextuality, interpictoriality, intermediality, and intermateriality. Not only the translation of described sensory impressions into colorful images, but also the digital collaging of heterogeneous materials, including manuscripts, maps, and plant samples, lends the book a pseudo-haptic quality. This essay argues that this quality intensifies the multisensory perception and the sensuality of reading.
