This article explores the evolving discourse on comics as educational media within the German journal Jugendschriften-Warte during the 1970s. After their emergence in the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1950s, comics were perceived with skepticism, seen as detrimental to youth literacy and moral integrity. During the following “anti-comics-campaign” the Jugendschriften-Warte became one of the most important forums for voices criticizing comics. However, as educational reforms emerged, a new generation of educators and critics advocated for a broader understanding of literature, recognizing the potential of comics to engage students. The article examines key debates and shifts in perspective in the journal, highlighting the tension between conservative cultural pessimism and progressive views on comics as tools for democratizing access to culture. Through a close analysis of articles from this period, it illustrates the transformation in educational attitudes towards comics, culminating in their gradual acceptance as viable teaching materials.
