Abstract |
This article discusses representations of the past in Polish comic books from the last decade. It suggests that, particularly in the period from 2005 to 2010, graphic narratives portraying national history were largely dependent on state funding and as such were subservient to the official politics of memory promoted by the conservative Law and Justice Party. It also discusses alternative comics which indicate a shift towards personal and local histories that are no longer grounded in the national myth of martyrdom fostered by a large portion of the political establishment in contemporary Poland.
