Abstract |
Carroll Rheinstrom (1904–1994), a consummate businessman, represented DC Comic Books to publishers around the world for more than three decades, starting in 1948. Traveling to the four corners of the globe, he exported American culture and values, particularly in Superman comic books while at the same time contending with international attacks on comic books. In Spain, Franco’s dictatorship banned Superman and carried out a press campaign against it. In 1970, Rheinstrom’s Arabic publisher sold an astounding 2,600,000 comic books, and in another year, his German publisher sold more Superman comics that were sold in the US. Rheinstrom had three residences, three wives, and two careers. Wife number two, Irene, was the love of his life, and his Hudson Valley home in Craryville NY his most cherished residence. Rheinstrom’s comics career was likely his most lucrative work. However, he also had a successful first career, as famous but bizarre, pulp magazine publisher Bernarr MacFadden’s chief adman. There too, from 1922–1948, he had notable achievements, radically changing magazine advertising, and exporting American culture and values. Added by: joachim |
