Abstract
The comics page is complex and irreducible, involving the interaction and tension between its multiple formal elements - including textual language, the single image, the image sequence, the narrative, referential, and symbolic content - and is always able to be (re)interpreted from other perspectives. The comics page can thus be modelled in a way that allies it with Nietzsche’s aesthetic metaphysics (including his version of the sublime), by which we restlessly access the irreducible complexities of life via particular and necessarily incomplete epistemological perspectives. More than merely an abstract observation, this metaphysical dimension of comics can have significant ramifications for the meanings available in processes of reading and interpreting individual comics. Through sensitivity to the ‘metaphysics of comics’ examined in this chapter, and as part of an interdisciplinary landscape, the study of graphic fiction can help enrich our understanding of the interaction between the various ‘ways of knowing’ that humanity uses to engage with the world and the lives lived within it.
