Abstract |
Beginning in the early 1940s and in particular from the beginning of the 21st century, the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf was transposed into a surprising number of series and comic books. Each of these rewritings pursues specific objectives, targets a specific audience and implements specific narrative and semiotic strategies. Each of these rewritings must therefore be studied taking into account its context of production and reception. The article aims to draw a broad overview of the different strategies adopted by screenwriters and comic designers in order to popularize, reinterpret or – in some cases – subvert the ancient English poem.
