Comics and Transmission of Recent History: GDR, Fall of the Wall and Reunification
Through the analysis of three examples of graphic novels published recently in Germany, this paper shows how this medium can be an efficient mean for the transmission of the recent German history (life in GDR, fall of the Wall, Reunification) as well as for the discussion of questions such as the life under a dictatorship, the means of resistance, the implications of the choices to obey, rebel or become an accomplice, that individuals make under a repressive regime. The three examples allow us to establish a first typology, taking into account the authenticity and historical research on the one hand, and the educational concern and the actor’s role on the other hand. |
