Abstract |
This chapter reassesses 20th century surrealist automatism in relation to Rodolphe Töpffer’s 19th century account of comic strip composition and production, in particular the impact of technological possibilities for autographic reproduction. It is argued that perceptions of the value and success of surrealist automatic texts and images shift when such works are understood as publishing interventions within the public sphere of production.
