This paper sketches a periodization of queer visibility in American comic books, stemming from a larger project that attempts to recover the history of the comic book medium’s responses to the AIDS crisis and homophobic violence. Examining the history of queer characters, themes, and narratives in American comic books, it becomes evident that three major periods of queer visibility may be delineated using a schema developed by theorists such as Pierre Bourdieu, Walter Benjamin, and Michel Foucault, and recently particularized to the study of comics historiography by Benjamin Woo. I offer a periodization based not on discrete chronological eras bounded on either side by specific dates, but rather based on the social, political, and institutional forces which impel or restrict the visibility of queer characters and narratives in comic books.
