Abstract |
Analyses the development of the cartoon character Superman, arguing that he signalled a break with the cartoons of the 1930s which represented the regression of history into stories, portrayed the hero of the industrial period, or travelled with Tarzan through the jungle of life. The appearance of Superman in 1938 heralded a new mixture of the heroic and extraordinary with the ordinary.
