“Gotham City has become one of the most famous virtual worlds of our days. Each month there is a binary number of new comic book releases which have Gotham City as its setting. It is an inherent part of serveral Hollywood blockbuster movies, breaking the records of box-office takings consistently. It also is the virtual environment of some of the most popular video games. […] By now Batman has become a similar phenomenon as Star Wars, present in many parts of the world.
In the following, the reasons for The Dark Knight’s popularity shall be analyzed. Emanated from the presumption that Batman’s whole appearance depends on the dark environment of Gotham City, this particular dystopia itself shall be the matter of interest. A depiction of its reference to our world and to other comic book cities as Superman’s Metropolis and Walt Disney’s Duckburg shall expose Gotham City’s outstanding significance.”
