This chapter examines how bearing witness to the suffering and pain of others gives voice to bodies, and probably souls. Drawing on Brian Fies’s graphic memoir Mom’s Cancer, which conveys the experience of illness through a mother’s struggle with cancer, the chapter considers comics and engagement with embodiment. After discussing the distinction between memoir and fiction, it highlights not only the artistic power of Mom’s Cancer but also the power of graphic memoir to present and tell the voice of the ill body. Finally, it looks at the unexpected outcome of hope that is illustrated in Fies’s memoir.
