Abstract |
The Online Bibliography of Anime and Manga Research/Anime and Manga Web Essay Archive (AMWESS) is [… a] comprehensive listing and clearinghouse of writings on anime, manga, the Japanese animation and comic-book industry and anime/manga fandom. It covers materials within three broad categories: published scholarship, fan-written non-academic works, and news media articles. The Bibliography includes abstracts of and citations to scholarly books, chapters and articles in academic journals, as well as to various other documents, such as research reports and white papers, as papers prepared for class, informal (fan-written) discussions, arguments and essays, and other materials. It is primarily a list of links to items on third-party sites, with some materials hosted directly. This site is always open to hosting writings that fit within its profile. There are no stylistic, content, or language restrictions. However, with very infrequent exceptions, reviews fall outside the scope of items considered, and all materials must be primarily in English. The overarching goal of the AMWESS is to provide access to resources that have previously not been categorized. Within this mission statement, AMWESS staff have identified the following objectives: 1. To provide access to a wide range of writing from various sources that approaches anime and manga from an academic perspective 2. To track media coverage and worldwide public and academic reception of Japanese popular culture 3. To inform academics, students, and the general public of the history of anime/manga research, current trends and theories in the field, and the future of anime/manga studies worldwide. A separate AMWESS objective, not related to the stated goal is to serve a fan resource that brings together all types of nonacademic fan writing on anime and manga and present an aspect of fandom expression that is very frequently ignored in favor of cosplay, fanfiction, and other more participatory modes. The Online Bibliography of Anime and Manga Research is organized by type of document.
