Abstract |
What does it mean to be called Australian? How does one identify themselves as a Western Australian? This paper is an analysis of the works by students from across the University of Western Australia enrolled in a fine art elective unit that explores the medium of graphic novels. The analysis is done by comparing the student works created across the 6 years that the unit has been running. During that time several shared themes have recurred, independently of each other, by students studying different majors, from different backgrounds, and across different years. This paper seeks to posit that through the graphic novelettes that the students have a produced, a new definition has arisen of what makes a person not from Australia a ‘Western Australian’, one that differs from the European-centric, heroic pioneer.
