“Contends that the biological nature and behavior patterns of the octopus are well suited for the illustration of ontogenetic development and related fantasies and that the Medusa symbol seems to relate to a stage of development that is primitive, uncivilized, unconscious, bisexual, and uncanny—a psychological time when conceptualizations are readily both thesis and antithesis, simultaneously terrifying and apotropiac. These octopus and medusal images are discussed as they are illustrated in comic books.
