Abstract
[Abstract in English below]

This thesis analyzes Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel Persepolis from an intercultural perspective, exploring the construction of cultural, social, and individual identities within a specific historical context and revealing the role models and narratives which influence the main character’s individualization. My thesis examines how in the context of political and social upheavals, and in the experience of exile and migration social, cultural and individual identity is continuously constructed and redefined both by assimilation as well as in Opposition to the new environment. In this process, trusting relationships, humor and irony prove to be essential resources for repositioning oneself in an unfamiliar cultural environment. By translating her memoir into the new narrative language of a graphic novel, Satrapi ties in her experience of her “former homes” to her new surrounding and its strong tradition of comics. She thus enters a “Third Space” and uses the empowering agency of narrative in search of becoming oneself. Persepolis can therefore be read as the interface between Satrapi’s new cultural present and her Iranian past, and as an independent, autonomous intercultural product which reflects the author’s fluid identity.
