Angela McRobbie has said, that comics, along with women's magazines ‘define and shape the woman's world, spanning every stage from early childhood to old age’ (McRobbie 1991: 83). This chapter outlines the history of comic publishing for girls, looking at titles from Schoolfriend (1950–1965) to Oh Boy (1976–1985). These pictorial texts were an important aspect of girls’ lives between the 1950s and the 1980s and so offer an insight into British girlhood and the tensions and issues surrounding definitions of girlhood in that period.
