Abstract |
Kaplan discusses the Marvel Age; the many creations of Stan Lee (Stanley Martin Lieber), among them the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, the Silver Surfer, and The X-Men; the influence of Chris Clarmont (making X-Man character Magneto a Holocaust survivor embittered by humanity's silence in the face of Nazi barbarity); the Fourth World of Jack Kirby (Jack Kurtzberg); underground comix creators Diane Noomin, Aline Kominsky, and Trina Robbins; Art Spiegelman's editorship of the underground magazine Arcade and its publication of his original 3-page version of Maus; Harvey Pekar and American Splendor; and Will Eisner's creation, in 1978, of the first graphic novel: A Contract with God.
