Abstract

The starting point of this work is that “Tarzan” and “Superman” are among those comics which depict the most important features of Utopias. Both “Tarzan” and “Superman” show clearly the associations existing between religion and comics. Both appear as redeemer characters by whom people hope to be released from their disastrous situation. In the comics in which “Tarzan” is the hero, aspects of religion, including the Christian religion, are absent. In the “Superman” comics however, there are explicit religious references in general including distinctly Christian references. The study points out that longings, hopes and fears of the modern human being are reflected in both the “Tarzan” and the “Superman” stories. The modern human being moves between Tarzan and Superman, either dreaming about a paradise where he can live free of pressure and stress or realising that making the world and life in general more scientific can dehumanise him.
