Abstract
Stan Cross was one of the greatest Australian cartoonists. His work was known and loved throughout Australia for over fifty years. He created Wally and the Major and The Potts but his most famous work is the cartoon For gorsake, stop laughing: this is serious!. Stan Cross was born in 1888 in Los Angeles, but he grew up in Perth. At twenty-four he travelled to London, where he studied drawing at St. Martin's School of Art. In 1919 the popular magazine Smith’s Weekly was founded in Sydney, and Stan was an instant staff member, creating the very first newspaper comic strip in Australia, You and Me, which soon became The Potts. Stop Laughing: This is Serious! contains many classic images from Stan Cross’s oeuvre, and sets his life in the context of the remarkable history of black-and-white art and cartooning in Australia.
