A conversation with author and comic book writer Cecil Castellucci (Batgirl; First Day on Earth; Shade, The Changing Woman; Boy Proof; The Plain Janes; Female Furies) about her career to date. The interview covers a range of topics, including (but not limited to) relationships between creativity, where one lives, and writing; comic book publishing; Shade, the Changing Girl; the contributions of editors Shelly Bond, Jamie S. Rich and Gerard Way; the storytelling of Steve Ditko, Peter Milligan and Chris Bachalo, in relation to Shade, the Changing Man; DC’s Vertigo imprint; the Female Furies, Big Barda and the legacy and impact of Jack Kirby’s Fourth World stories; the artistry of Adrian Melo; art, activism and comics as political commentary; comics continuity and how stories can be reinvented while remaining true to core elements associated with related characters; the allure of Star Trek; experimenting with comics and opera (‘graphic operas’) with composer André Ristic; and her work on The Plain Janes with cartoonist, illustrator and designer Jim Rugg.
