Abstract |
The focus of this paper is the forgotten and critically neglected comic strip work produced by the Irish painter Jack B. Yeats for a number of British publications between c. 1893 and 1917. His later fame as a painter and the construction of him as a national figure in Ireland have both contributed to the erasure of this substantial and important contribution to the development of the comics form in Britain. Given that the work was once well known, as part of a novel and widely circulated mass medium, this chapter seeks to interrogate the absence of this material from art-historical accounts of his work and to reassess Yeats as a comic strip artist.
