Cerebus est le seul véritable exemple de comic book « d’avant-garde » en Amérique du nord. Son créateur Dave Sim y explore les potentialités du moyen d’expression qu’est la bande dessinée en diversifiant les rapports que l’image entretient avec le langage. On peut dégager trois étapes successives dans l’évolution de Cerebus : une phase « parodique », où le récit se fait sciemment ironique ; une phase où le langage « remonte » dans le champ pictural et conditionne de nouvelles modalités de narration graphique ; une troisième phase où le texte se désolidarise de l’image pour manifester la nature hybride du moyen d’expression.

Cerebus is the only contemporary exemplar of an “avant-garde” comic book in North America. Its creator and publisher Dave Sim explores the potential of the comic strip as a medium by breaking with traditional comic-book narration and diversifying the forms of inter-play between image and language. Three stages are analyzed in the evolution of Cerebus: the “parodic” stage, where the narrative becomes self-consciously ironical; in the next stage, the text “wells up” into the pictorial space and determines new modalities of graphic narration; in the final stage, text and image are separated to emphasize the hybrid nature of the medium.
