Abstract |
In March 1976, when we first had the idea for what was eventually to become the book, Correspondance, we never dreamt that we would end up trying to revive an exhausted and much neglected genre. In fact, Correspondance had very little in common with a roman-photo. Our aim was to produce a work in which text and image would be subtly interwoven without either predominating or being reduced to a purely illustrative role. So that both these individual systems could develop as autonomously as possible, we decided that the book should run from page to page—text, then photography; or photography, then text. In fact, it was essential that neither of the two clements was allowed to exist before the other had put its statement across; that, most importantly, neither of them was in danger of taking over. The book gradually took shape without the aid of a written script, but was based on several simple principles which we agreed on as we went along. For example, if the impetus for the first series was provided by the images, then the second took the text as a starting point for the photography.
