As Simone de Beauvoir so famously stated, “one is not born, but rather becomes, a woman.” Beauvoir’s analysis of womanhood as a process of becoming illustrates the journey Lois Lane takes to become a more compassionate, loving person through her relationship with Clark Kent. This article will analyze the 1986 reboot of the Superman mythos, focusing on the character of Lois Lane as she develops from her initial meeting with Clark in 1986, through their dating, engagement, breakup, and eventual wedding in 1996. During each major phase of Lois’s life, this article will analyze Lois’s character, noting the ways in which she is defined and created by men. Existing as the lone woman in a world of men, Lois has learned to be tough, brave, and strong; however, that leaves little room in her personality for love, compassion, and openness. This article will chronicle Lois’s progression from a tough, brash single woman to a three-dimensional, balanced wife. As this article argues, Lois is able to become a three-dimensional character through her definition by men (Sam Lane, Perry White, Clark Kent, Superman) and her resistance to that definition. It is through Lois’s resistance to being defined as a woman that allows her to become a fully developed character, independent in a world of men. Using Beauvoir’s feminist lens, this article will show Lois’s development from macho, one-of-the-boys caricature to a compassionate person with a capacity for love.
