Comics theory has rightly emphasized the medium-specific use of narrative devices and narrative strategies in the graphic novel. However, the more innovative readings of the field have paid less attention to what remains one of the cornerstones of the graphic storytelling: the character. In this paper, I defend a medium-specific approach of the notion of character and propose a brief example of the visual reading of a ‘protagonist’. The example I analyse is Fritz Haber, a five-volume historical graphic novel on the father of chemical warfare, by Belgian artist David Vandermeulen.
