Abstract |
“Comparative readings of Las Locas, Blue Beetle, and Batwoman allow one to Latina/o and/or queer authenticity insofar as the comics are aligned with particular identities—latinidad and queer. In other words, does a particular comic hew closer to a Latina/o or queer aesthetic, and, if so, on what basis does one conceive an idealized Latina/o and/or queer aesthetic? Or, alternatively, should questions of authenticity simply remain irrelevant at the risk of essentialism? Reading Las Locas alongside Blue Beetle and Batwoman ultimately asks whether representations of Latinas/os and queer characters can coexist in a comic universe without notions or models of authenticity against readers may measure a Latina/o and/or queer character—underground or mainstream, superhero or otherwise.” (40)
