“This article joins a growing scholarly discussion on collecting with several main goals in mind. Using some of Benjamin’s thoughts as a jump- ing-off point, I want to add to the scholarship on popular collecting through case studies of collectors of a particular type of object, rare records. I am interested in Benjamin’s thoughts about collecting, meaning, and time, but I also want to reframe them to consider the fact that records function not just as objects but also as cultural documents. And I am especially interested here in the meaning-making aspects of collecting, as a process that includes not only the consumption of objects but also the cultural production of meaning, as collectors find creative ways to renew their particular old worlds.” (S. 100)
