Abstract
Watchmen verbindet inhaltliche mit komplexen formalen Verweissystemen, bei denen die Funktion jeder Sprechblase, jedes Panels und jedes Panelübergangs uneindeutig ist. Dass Watchmen sich als Comic relativ mühelos lesen lässt, liegt daran, dass es stets eine vordergründige Primärfunktion gibt. Dass Watchmen große Kunst ist, liegt daran, dass es fast nie bei dieser Primärfunktion bleibt.
