Abstract
This paper discusses the depiction of domestic space in contemporary graphic novels (comic books). Joe Sacco’s Palestine and Chris Ware’s Jimmy Corrigan, the Smartest Kid on Earth are used as examples of graphic novels that use space as an innovative means of constructing a narrative and as a way of representing the psychological condition of their characters. These are analysed using the following concepts: Scott McCloud and the temporal use of frames and sequence; Gaston Bachelard’s interior I exterior oppositions; George Perec’s ideas of the space of the bed and its relation to memory; Barbara Ehrenreich’s theories of the vulnerability of the working poor; Edward Said and the concept of min al-dakhil (“from the interior”) in relation to Palestinians’ lives, and Michel Foucault’s heterotopia of deviation applied to Sacco’s depiction of refugee camps. Frames and sequence, the relationship of text and image and cinematic graphic techniques are discussed and their role in depicting the anxieties that occur in relation to domestic spaces in these narratives. The conclusion suggests that these graphic novelists use the ambiguities of spatial depiction to explore psychic fragility and tension.
