Abstract
[Abstract in English below]

France, the continuation of Gaul, was a republican and lay concept which naturally developed under the Third Republic. The usual proofs of this statement are supplemented today by the remarkable Gauls’ presence in the statuary of the Edwardian era. This concept is now criticized and abandoned. But how to explain the phenomenon of Asterix? The latter does not seem to be the avatar of Vercingetorix, since Vercingetorix is famous as the defeated, while Asterix is famous as the invincible. The success of Asterix, the hero of the “irreductible Gauls” challenging the surrounding world might express the success of Gaullism exalting French specificity against every form of ambient supranationality. Thus, it can happen that myths be perpetuated at the cost of changes of role.
