This article explores the sources and origins of the film comics in Russia before 1934, the year when Aleksandr Medvedkin’s Schast'e/Happiness was shot. The author argues that, even though traditionally classed as a form of the lubok, the film might be identified in a broader (universal) sense as a comic strip. This is demonstrated through an analysis of the film’s narrative, arguing that, while comics are a genre, the lubok – often defined as a ‘Russian komiks’ – is merely a style.
