This chapter examines subjectivity through the object by offering a reading of Martin Vaughn-James’s graphic novel The Cage. It begins by considering individuality and subjectivity in comics before turning to a discussion of object-subject relations in The Cage. More specifically, it asks whether one can also read The Cage as an example of how subjectivity, autobiography, and memory work in comics. It argues that Vaughn-James’s apparently objective style exemplifies a different idea of subjectivity. The chapter also shows how Vaughn-James’s ink drawings seem to resist any analysis in terms of subjective graphiation.
