Abstract
The intellectual property structure of mainstream superhero comics publishing companies opens the door for artists and writers to generate multi-layered narratives that build on pre-existing stories in a way that rewards long-term readers for their deep understanding of the mythologies attached to iconic superheroes. I read several excerpts from comic books featuring one of the most well recognized superheroes, The Batman, in order to demonstrate the ways in which the formal conventions of popular superhero comics invite fans to engage in active and playful reading practices. The copyright arrangement that provides opportunities for remediation of old stories and images within the publishing company universe creates an opportunity to consider the potential benefits of an expansion of the public domain.
