Abstract |
In Flood!, Eric Drooker reveals himself as a unique comics artist, presenting an affirmative worldview amid an increasingly apocalyptic landscape. Exploring the resultant sense of duality between a harsh reality and a hopeful future, Drooker’s vision manifests through his extensive use of music imagery. In the context of Flood!, music adds a venue for such dual messages, as well as for forging a sense of human connectedness rooted in music’s own universality. Furthermore, music acts as an additional factor working alongside the traditional comics blend of words and images. It is also worth noting how music and comics function in terms of audience perception. Both media have a ‘synesthetic’ nature, engaging multiple senses in a way conducive to multiplicities of meaning. Furthermore, they share a significant capacity to engage readers and listeners cognitively, and this contributes to Flood!'s thematic progressivism.
