Ideas of the animal and of animality continue to hold a central position in cultural thought and practice. Picturing the Beast focuses particularly on the role of the animal in the popular, symbolic and visual aspects of contemporary culture, and provides a highly original contribution both to contemporary cultural history and to theories of representation. Baker argues that representations of the animal, and visual representations in particular, have shaped both our understanding of human identity and the way we think about animals themselves. Drawing methodologically on the new cultural history and on post-structuralist theory, this book offers detailed readings of the complex and contradictory ways in which the image of the animal operates today. The examples illustrated and discussed range from Disney to zoos; from hostile political caricatures to anthropomorphic comic-book characters. The book also considers the largely unquestioned role of animal imagery in the rhetoric of animal rights, and analyses the media stereotype of the animal rights activist.
