Abstract
This article examines some recent graphic novels and argues that they should be called comic books. Gordon evaluates the success of different artists at matching the style of art to the subject represented, discusses the representational and narrative possibilities of the comic form, and points to some flat moments in otherwise fine historical works.

Graphic Novels covered:
Spain Rodriguez: Che, A Graphic Biography. New York: Verso, 2008.
Paul Buhle and Nicole Schulman: Wobblies! A Graphic History. New York: Verso, 2005.
Rick Geary: J. Edgar Hoover: A Graphic Biography. New York: Hill and Wang, 2008.
Sharon Rudahl: Dangerous Woman: The Graphic Biography of Emma Goldman. New York: New Press, 2007.
Howard Zinn, Mike Konopacki, and Paul Buhle: A People's History of American Empire: A Graphic Adaptation. New York: Metropolitan Books, 2008.
