Alan Moore and David Lloyd’s V for Vendetta is often discussed without regard for its original serialization in British independent comic Warrior in the early 1980s. This paper demonstrates how the strip was shaped by the political context of early Thatcherism, contemporary debates on the Left and within the anarchist movement, and Moore’s own involvement in anti-fascist activism. It discusses Moore and Lloyd’s subversion of the established conventions of the superhero genre and metatextual experimentation with comics form aimed at creating a work of cultural resistance to authoritarianism. It is argued that this was only made possible by the alternative production context of Warrior and its act as a bridge between underground and fanzine practices and the UK mainstream.
