Popular serial narrative entertains a concept of mythology that both adapts and deviates from traditional ideas about myth and mythological characters. One of the cradles of this comparatively recent aesthetic comes in the format of adventure serials for a plethora of new media – comics, radio, cinema and TV – including prominently the superhero genre. The often confusing mix of similarities and differences to established concepts of mythology as well as the troubled relationship towards authorship that inform these series’ fictional worlds, storytelling conventions, and genre recognisability can be better understood by examining the triadic influence between textual control in the form of copyright considerations, new media and the development of the popular series.
