Although an increasing number of academic libraries have recognized the value of including comic books in their collections, most have not acquired their materials in a truly systematic manner. This article discusses various conceptual bases which can be used in the development of a “focused” comic book collection—one which complements, enhances or supports existing collection strengths or research interests (such as acquiring western comic books for a library with significant holdings in that genre of literature). Also discussed are some strategies involved in and resources available to support the development of such a focused collection.
